Olympics Day 7 Recap: Team USA Struggles To Medal

Olympics Day 7 RecapDay seven in PyeongChang was momentous for nations like Korea, but was somewhat of a disaster for the United States. After a day of surprising upsets, Team USA failed to make the podium in any event.

The first disappointment came when Mikaela Shiffrin, previous slalom gold medalist, failed to defend her Sochi title. Shiffrin felt sick before her first run and initially speculated it as a virus, but later justified the pre-race puking as nerves.

The 22-year-old finished with a combined score of 1:39.03, which left her .08 seconds away from winning bronze. Instead, Shiffrin completely missed the podium and Sweden’s Wendy Holdener unexpectedly won gold.

Snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis is considered one of the best American athletes in her sport, but Olympic gold still eludes her. In the women’s snowboard cross event, the nine-time Winter X Games titleholder lost an early lead and was unable to make up lost ground. Eva Samkova beat out Jacobellis by .03 for the bronze medal.

American figure skater Nathan Chen had one of the more disastrous performances of the night (again) during his short program. Chen was one of the gold medal favorites heading into the competition, even after a few mistakes during the team event. Bookmakers and fans were shocked on Friday when Chen fell into 17th place during the men’s short program after making mistakes on all three of his jumps.

The first week of the 2018 Winter Olympics was not kind to Team USA, but we can all hope for better outcomes heading into the second week.

Lindsay Vonn is favored to win the Alpine Skiing downhill with -120 betting odds, while the USA women’s team is expected to dominate the ice hockey event with -135 Olympic betting odds to win gold.

There is still a chance for Team USA to redeem themselves, and as fans of the red, white, and blue, we know that the Americans can turn things around in PyeongChang.
